From 1986 to 1990, the Colombian Government legally recognized 20 million hectares of rainforest in the Colombian Amazon region as “collective indigenous territory” or ‘resguardos.’ Today, the Gaia Amazonas Foundation continues the legacy and helps protect the region, facilitating dialogue and action that integrates Indigenous and non-indigenous knowledge systems. What is needed to establish an effective, environmental governance framework for the wider Amazon basin in partnership with Indigenous communities, local governments, nation states, and private actors?
